CEI’s Food Program is a nutritious food distribution program offering more than 4,000 suppers and snacks daily to low-income youth and students in the San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties. The total number of suppers and snacks served annually is over 1,000,000 during the school year, to over 100 sites.
The growing cost of living in the Bay Area along with deep, long-standing unemployment have made food insecurity even more acute for low-income families. Many after-school programs in the four county service area do not have funding to feed the children and youth attending for services. Hungry children make poor learners.
CEI’s Food Program includes two components, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) that operates during the school year, and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that is offered during the summer recess.
We serve sites where at least 50% or more of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch in order to assess which areas are most in need.
